Dear Friends,

There is certainty in nature. As it does every spring, the marsh is coming alive with returning wildlife. Terrapins are emerging from hibernation, osprey have built their nests, the call of the laughing gulls has begun, and fiddler crabs are starting to peek out of their burrows. Life continues on in the marsh, blissfully unaffected by the disruption and lack of certainty swirling around the rest of us.

Although the wetlands themselves are busy, inside the Institute it is quieter than usual. In a normal summer, our staff are delivering public programs and special events, our educators are providing science-based learning programs to thousands of school children, and our research scientists are out conducting their life-saving work. But this is not a normal year. The COVID-19 crisis has led to widespread cancellation of our programs and events. Our building and property are closed and staff are working remotely so that when we can welcome you back, we are ready with modified programs and new educational experiences to connect you to the marsh while ensuring your safety.

The natural places and the flora and fauna we love provide respite from the strain of the coronavirus pandemic, and they will continue to nurture us in the weeks and months ahead. Whether you come to The Wetlands Institute to enjoy our wildflower gardens, help us tag monarch butterflies, engage in birdwatching, or enjoy our exhibits, we know you are as eager as we are to return to this special place.

COVID-19 has affected The Wetlands Institute’s ability to provide in-person educational and hands-on encounters, but it has not shaken our commitment to our work. Experts tell us that the “new normal” may be very different from the old. All of us at the Institute are rethinking our programs and experiences to be safe, fun and fulfilling for all.

Your gift, of any size, will help us continue our critical work. It will help our staff create new and exciting ways to connect to nature. Now, more than ever, your gift will have tremendous impact.

Can we count on you?

Support like yours has always been essential in helping us preserve, protect, and steward our coastal ecosystems,  you and people like you have helped our community cultivate a relationship with our beloved wetlands. You have helped us rescue thousands of terrapins and hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs. With support we have tracked marsh critters of all sizes through different cities, countries, and continents. Your support now will continue to bring appreciation of the wetlands and their inhabitants to people at a time when we need nature the most.

Thank You,
